The primary goal was to install durable stainless steel plates every 100 steps along the Manitou Incline, serving both as a guide for hikers and a crucial tool for emergency services.

The project significantly aids in rescue operations, providing precise locations for emergency responders. It also offers hikers a clear indication of their progress, enhancing their hiking experience.

The Manitou Incline consists of 2,744 steps, with an elevation gain of 2,000 feet. The project involved placing 29 stainless steel, weather-resistant plates, measuring 5 x 15 cm, at each 100-step interval.

The Manitou Incline, renowned for its challenging terrain, has an average grade of 45 percent, with some sections reaching a steepness of 68 percent. This trail draws an impressive average of 22,000 hikers each month, underscoring the significance of the project for a large user base. The Incline is not just a hiking trail; it's a test of endurance, strength, and determination. Thousands of hikers are drawn to it, eager to conquer its demanding ascent. The step count provides a motivational tool for hikers, encouraging them to reach the top and enjoy the stunning views. However, the trail's difficulty often catches many tourists off guard, leading to situations where they require rescue by emergency services. The installation of engraved plates along the Incline plays a critical role in these rescue operations. These plates, positioned at regular intervals, allow rescuers to pinpoint the exact location of the emergency, facilitating a faster and more efficient response. This system aids rescuers ​​in preparing appropriately, estimating the number of personnel needed, and determining the necessary equipment for each rescue mission.

The project was a community effort, involving the recruitment and management of 24 volunteers.

Over 100 hours were dedicated to serving the community through this initiative.

Successfully raised over $1,000 for the procurement of metal plates.

This project not only improved the safety and functionality of the Manitou Incline but also demonstrated the strength of community involvement in enhancing one of my favorite public spaces in Colorado Springs.
